Could You Be Missing Out On Pension Credit?

2 min read

Thousands of older people are entitled to Pension Credit but are not claiming it.

If you are over State Pension age and on a low income, Pension Credit could provide extra money each week and help you access other valuable support. Many people assume they will not qualify because they own their home, have some savings or receive a State Pension, but this is not always the case.

What is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit is a benefit designed to top up income for people over State Pension age who are on a lower income.

As well as providing extra money, receiving Pension Credit can act as a gateway to other forms of support, including help with:

  • Housing costs

  • Council Tax

  • Heating costs and energy support

  • NHS costs such as dental treatment, glasses and travel to hospital appointments

  • The Warm Home Discount Scheme

Even a small Pension Credit award may unlock access to additional support worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year.

You May Be Eligible Even If...

Many people are surprised to learn they could qualify if they:

  • Own their own home

  • Have a private or workplace pension

  • Have some savings

  • Are caring for someone

  • Have a disability or health condition

  • Live alone

The only way to know for sure is to check.

Why Is Pension Credit Important?

The rising cost of everyday essentials means many older people are finding it harder to make ends meet.

Claiming Pension Credit can help increase financial security and ensure people receive all the support available to them. Unfortunately, many eligible pensioners miss out simply because they do not realise they can claim.

If you are not sure whether you qualify, or if you know someone who may be entitled, we encourage you to seek advice.
