Celebrating the Heart and Soul of Lewes District Citizens Advice: Voices of Volunteers and Clients

At Lewes District Citizens Advice (LDCA), we take immense pride in the unwavering dedication of our volunteers and the heartfelt appreciation from our clients. Our volunteers are the backbone of our service, offering their time, expertise, and compassion to assist those in need. Equally, the feedback from our clients drives us to continue our mission of providing free, confidential, and impartial advice. Here, we share some inspiring quotes from both our volunteers and clients that highlight the profound impact of our work.

Voices of Our Volunteers

1. Embracing Variety and Lifelong Learning

"I enjoy the variety of cases and the fact that there is always something new to learn."

Our volunteers thrive on the dynamic environment at LDCA, where each day brings new challenges and learning opportunities. This constant evolution keeps the work engaging and fulfilling.

2. Empowering People and Pursuing Broader Interests

“I volunteer for the Citizens' Advice Bureau because it helps me to understand how our society functions and to empower people. I am especially interested in advising people on their options in difficult situations so that they can try to improve their lives. Being an adviser helps me to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to do so and to pursue my broader interests in this area. It is also stimulating and fun!”

Volunteering is not just about giving back; it's also about personal growth and development. Our volunteers find joy in making a difference while enhancing their own skills and understanding of societal issues.

3. Rewarding Experiences and Diverse Interactions

“Volunteering at Citizens Advice is extremely rewarding - we talk to people from all walks of life, work through their everyday problems and see if we can find solutions together on issues as diverse as housing, benefits, family matters and employment. It is a privilege to be part of this invaluable community service.”

Connecting with people from all walks of life enriches our volunteers' experiences, offering them a unique perspective on the diverse challenges faced by our community.

4. Advocating for Systemic Change

“So many of our clients' problems are part of a bigger picture - systemic problems, such as the lack of affordable housing or the complicated and punitive benefits system. We gather information about these issues and present them to local decision makers, in the hope that they make a difference. For example, highlighting the lack of NHS emergency dental services in Lewes District. We also work with Citizens Advice National to lobby national politicians and policy makers. Research and campaigns might sound geeky but the reason I love it is because we use data and client stories to give our clients a voice, and make sure they are heard by those who hold the power to make changes.”

Our volunteers are not just advisers; they are advocates for change. By collecting and presenting data, they amplify the voices of our clients and strive to influence policy for the better.

5. A Long-Term Commitment to Learning and Service

"I started volunteering with LDCA in September, 2004, the week after I took early retirement from my job. I knew that I would need something to keep me occupied and, hopefully, challenged. It’s now been nearly 20 years since I started training and I’m still learning something new every week. It’s great to be working within an organisation which helps so many people every day."

A long-term volunteer reflects on nearly two decades of service, underscoring the continual learning and fulfillment that comes from helping others through LDCA.
