The Role:
Citizens Advice Lewes District is a local charity providing free, independent, and impartial advice to thousands of people across our 29 square kilometre district which includes seaside, urban and rural communities and over 102 thousand residents. In addition to our advice services, we play an important role through Research and Campaigns in influencing policy and decision makers, from companies right up to Government, using evidence and analysis from our clients to show how things can be made better.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and locally based Chair of Trustees with experience of the not-for-profit or public sector to lead the charity and support the Board and management team in developing our services and securing the vital resources we need to meet increasing demand.
This is a high-profile role in our community, which will provide leadership and direction to the organisation with the main aim to enable the Board and our service to fulfil its responsibilities, ensure effective governance and strategic direction of the organisation and at the same time, develop and maintain meaningful relationships with key, external stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
Ensuring that Board decisions are made within the remit of the governance policies and the policies of Citizens Advice
Planning the annual cycle of quarterly Board meetings; chairing and facilitating the smooth running of these as well as our monthly Cabinet sub-committee meetings
Planning agendas with the Secretary and CEO
Developing membership of the Trustee Board to ensure it contains a diverse range of skills, experience and knowledge needed to operate effectively, with consideration for community representation
Ensure the Board reviews its own work, seeking views of all sections of the community served
Ensure that decisions taken at Board and Cabinet meetings are implemented effectively
Provide support, guidance, and supervision to the CEO on a regular basis
Build an effective network with peers across the region as well as relationships with National Citizens Advice
Working with the Treasurer to ensure proper management of the service’s finance and budgets, including preparation of annual budget and statutory returns
Represent the service in the community and at public events ensuring effective relationships and partnerships are fostered
Represent the service in relationships with funders
About You: This is a highly rewarding role, and you will need to be fully committed to the aims and principles of Citizens Advice as well as committed to our organisation. We are looking for a Chair who is based in our region and can demonstrate:
Proven leadership
Strong experience of chairing meetings and committee work
Facilitation and supportive management skills
Tact, integrity, empathy, and diplomacy
Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort into the role
Clear and concise judgement and decision making
A willingness to listen and take on board the views of others
Ability to work as part of a team
A knowledge of the work of the voluntary sector and charities is preferred
